Auction: 21041 - The "Dubois" Collection of Jamaica Postal History and Stamps - Part II
Lot: 667

(x) Missent To or Mail Via Jamaica
1874 (22-25 Nov.) envelope, complete with very long letter, from Cuthbert Druitt on board S.S. Moselle at sea and completed on 25 November, some twenty days later stating that he is now on board the Seagull having arrived that day at Port Royal and visited the ship to despatch the letter and noting that he is rejoining the Moselle the following day, marked "No stamps obtainable, H.M.S. Seagull, Port Royal 22/11/74" and showing large "3/-" double rate charge handstamp alongside rare "plymouth to bristol t.p.o." datestamp (14.12) and, on reverse, St. Thomas (28.11) and two arrival datestamps (15.12). A most unusual military cover. Photo

Note: The writer notes that he stopped in St. Thomas where a report was received of a hurricane in Jamaica and that there was a severe tremor in St. Thomas. He comments of St. Thomas that "if it were not for the English Mail Steamers the whole place would go to rack and ruin"
