1842 (21 Feb.) entire letter from South Carolina "By the first vessel from New York", variously rated and showing "paid" handstamp and Chester S.C. datestamp on face, the reverse with oval-framed "forwarded through/gilpin's exchange/reading room and/foreign letter office/n york" oval-framed handstamp and superb New York double-arc datestamps, all in red. One of only four examples of the Gilpin handstamp recorded, the Agency only being open from January to September 1842. Photo
