Mafeking Siege
1900 (30 Mar.) envelope, with original letter, to London bearing seriffed overprint Cape 1d. on ½d. Hope seated (3), 3d. on 1d. and British Bechuanaland 6d. on 3d., all neatly cancelled, apparently intercepted by the Boers and marked for return to Mafeking in blue crayon in the hand of Mr. Howat, the Postmaster, held for six weeks and then reposted on 16 May with addition of serrifed overprint on British Bechuanaland 1/- on 4d.; most unusual. Note: Early in April, Boer Forces intercepted mail out of Mafeking, shot the runners and attached letters to their bodies which were found the next morning near the defence lines.
