1898 Provisional "Cheque" Stamp Issue
Setting I, Imperforate with Postmaster's initials
1d. vermilion and grey-blue without the initials and centre inverted, unused without gum, fine. One of the major rarities of British Central Africa philately with only fifteen believed to exist. B.P.A. Certificate (1997). S.G. 54b, £32,000. Photo

Note: This exceptionally rare variety was first reported in "Stanley Gibbons Monthly Journal", October 1901 where it was stated that they believed that the whole top row of one sheet "was struck thus". It is unknown if this strip that was referred to was cut up at the time though two pairs were extant, one in the Royal Philatelic Collection (Positions 11 and 12) and one ex the Hind sale (Positions 14 and 15) though the latter pair's whereabouts remain unknown. The Mosley collection contains a single (Position 1).
