1898 "one/penny" on 3/- Provisional
There was a temporary shortage of 1d. stamps for internal postage early in 1898 due to the loss of a shipment of stamps which left Chinde on 25 January. As an interim measure 33,600 examples of the 3/- were overprinted locally "one penny". A total of 33,420 stamps were sold; nevertheless examples are very rare on cover. Many examples are found with pink fibres on reverse - the sheets being interleaved with pink blotting paper.
Varieties
A single, [38], variety "pnney" for "penny", usual pink fibres on reverse, fine mint. Very rare. Holcombe Certificate (1989). S.G. 53a, £10,000. Photo

Note: The error was corrected early in the printing run. The Holcombe certificate states that it is from [47] which is incorrect according to Bryan de Robeck in his book "The 1898 Provisionals of British Central Africa".
