Stamps of South Africa Used in South West Africa
These were available up to 31 January 1923 when they ceased to be valid. On 17 December 1920 the League of Nations conferred a Mandate of Administration of the territory on His Britannic Majesty, to be carried out by the government in South Africa. The Mandate came into force on 1 January 1923, on which date the first South African stamps overprinted for use in the territory were issued

1918 (31 Jan.) "A.R." envelope from Windhoek to Switzerland, bearing 2½d. (3) and coil ½d. and 1d. cancelled with single-ring datestamps, the adhesives with rings drawn round in blue crayon and with censor label and handstamp; a couple of small faults and two punch holes at foot, one affecting corner of ½d., nevertheless a rare franking with coil stamps; also 1919 "Bookpost" piece from Rehoboth to Windhoek with censor handstamp in violet.
