Lot: 755

North Borneo
1916 (Feb.) 10c. on 12c. black and deep blue block of fifty [51-100] with margins at sides, the right margin originally folded over so that "s" of "cents" appears on the reverse of the selvedge, and subsequently the missing "s" on the right vertical column has been inserted by hand, unused with large part original gum; the block severed in half and one stamp in the bottom row with part torn away. A magnificent exhibition block. S.G. 188/188a/188b, £8,500+. Photo

Note: The surcharge was applied in a forme of 25 (5x5), four times to each sheet, with the well-known erro, inverted "s" in "cents", falling on Nos. 15, 20, 65 and 70. In this case, the error on No. 65 appeared in its normal position, but on No. 70, it fell on the gummed reverse of the selvedge. When the printer applied the hand-held "s" to No. 70, he did it the right way up, not being aware of the error in the surcharging forme.
