Lot: 744

(x) New Guinea
1922 (22 May) New South Wales OHMS "Penalty" envelope registered to Transvaal, bearing NWPI KGV 1d. red (5) perforated "OS" clearly tied by four strikes of Rabaul c.d.s., showing black registration label and, on reverse, Sydney and Langlaagte arrival datestamps; the envelope with some creases. A very rare franking to an exotic destination and regarded as the best Official franking cover available. Photo

Note: The surcharge was applied in a forme of 25 (5x5), four times to each sheet, with the well-known error, inverted "s" in "cents", falling on Nos. 15, 20, 65 and 70. In this case, the error on No. 65 appeared in its normal position, but on No. 70, it fell on the gummed reverse of the selvedge. When the printer applied the hand-held "s" to No. 70, he did it the right way up, not being aware of the error in the surcharging forme.
