Postal History
Battle of Tamatave
1811 (20 May) entire letter to London sent aboard H.M.S. Phoebe while 'off the Isle of Madagascar' on the day of the battle. Dramatic contents describe preparations for engagement with the French vessels: '[we] are now expecting to come to action every minute. As it may not be the will of God Almighty that I should ever see you again, I write these few lines as I know it will be a great consolation but God grant us success'. Signed 'Robert Gordon'. Wax seal removed otherwise in good condition with minor foxing. 1810 (17 July) entire letter also from Gordon to Ledbury written aboard H.M.S. Phoebe, mentioning that their missing is to travel to the Cape and 'thence to look for a fine fat French frigate coming from the Isle of France'. Entire with showing some wear. An important and historic early duo
