Incoming Mail from France - Ballon Monte
1870 (11 Oct.) Ballon Monte small entire letter from the Minister of the Marine for the Colonies to M. Menche de Loisne, Governor of Martinique (1870-71), bearing 1868 40c. applied overlapping the edge of the letter at top and tied by despatch c.d.s. in red, carried by the "Le Washington" leaving Paris on 12 October and then landing at Cambrai, with onward transmission by train within France, various c.d.s. on reverse including St. Nazaire and Maritime "Ligne B", the latter dated 16 November and indicating carriage by the "Floride" (arriving to Fort de France on 25 December), together with others denoting travelling usages by train. Minor imperfections, heavily cancelled and creased as a result of being applied on both sides, of little significance for this very rare Ballon Monte usage sent to Martinique. Maury 31, €22,500
