(x) Northern Rhodesia
Postage Due Stamps
1953 Mkushi Provisional Issue
In July 1953, postal rates within the South African Postal Union were increased. Many post offices in Northern Rhodesia experienced shortages of Postage Due stamps. Owing to a misunderstanding, quantities of the 1951 1d. Definitive and of the 1953 Rhodes Birth Centenary 1d. stamp were overprinted and surcharged by typewriter. Although unofficially prepared, their usage was subsequently approved by the Postal Authorities

1953 (July) envelope from Broken Hill to Wanor franked with Rhodes Birth Centenary ½d. and 1d. sharing a light datestamp, showing manuscript "T1d" in blue crayon and bearing Definitive 1d. green Type 1 with typewritten "postage /due/1d" in red neatly cancelled by Mkushi datestamp (5.8) on arrival; central vertical fold. Very rare with only eleven such covers recorded in The Rhodesian Philatelist of which this is number 5 and the earliest recorded date of use of the Definitive 1d. B.P.A. Certificate (1981). S.G. cat. from £4,750. Photo
