1795 (21 Sept.) entire letter from Capt. Spranger from H.M.S. Rattlesnake, under his command, at Table Bay to London and despatched by Capt. Hardy to the U.K., no postal markings; written five days after the surrender of the Dutch garrison and with text including "After a fatiguing campaign of 6 weeks....in the new capacity of Col. of a Battalion of 500 seamen... Final conquest... my exertions have received the most flattering testimony of General Craig & the Admirals approbation....enclosed is a copy of the Admirals letter"; the outer wrapper (professionally restored) docketed "Sept. 1795. J.W.S. Acc. of Capture of the Cape of Good Hope & Admiral Elphinstone's letter to John". An historic letter from this important engagement
