AU55 | Henry VIII (1509-1547), Second Coinage, Sovereign, 1538-1541, [Tariffed at 22s6d], hENRICVS : DEI : GRACIA : R[EX] | + ANGLIE : ET : FRANC .' DNS : hIB .', saltire stops, dies refurbished with re-punched legends, King enthroned, holding sword and sceptre, fretted throne back, rev. IhESUS : AVTEM : TRANSIENS : PER : MEDIVM : ILLORVM : IBAT '., Royal Shield atop Tudor Rose in elaborate double tressure, saltire in spandrels, 15.32g, 8h, m.m. Lis 3 [over sunburst on obverse] (Murdoch 408; Whitton O1d/R4; Potter [1955], pp. 567; Hird [1961], 6; King 27 same dies; Schneider I, 570/571 same dies; North 1782; Spink 2267), traces of reddish tone, otherwise an honest an uniformly struck example of this most iconic coin, struck from a remarkable obverse die that transcended Henry's first and Second Coinages, very fine and very rare, only five traced by this cataloguer in modern commerce, in NGC holder, graded AU55 (Cert. #5880285-002)

This coin is struck from the fourth, and last, state of a remarkable obverse die. First used, with m.m. portcullis, during Henry's first coinage (Whitton O1a), it was overpunched with mintmark sunburst at the beginning of the second coinage (Whitton O1b), and again with a mintmark lis (Whitton O1c), before being extensively reworked on the king's face, throne and legend (Whitton O1d – this state), c.f. BNJ XXVI pp/67-72 and plates I-II
