Oliver Cromwell, Pattern Broad, 1656, by Thomas Simon, OLIVAR • D • G • R P • ANG • SCO • ET • HIB & PRO •, laureate head left, rev. PAX • QVÆRITVR • BELLO • 16 56 •, crowned shield, edge straight milled, 9.10g, 6h (Spink 3225; Lessen A2; Schneider II, 367; W&R 39; Stratos 72), a deft scratch below second 6 of date and a touch of surface friction, otherwise a truly sublime example superior even to the Stratos coin, majestically proof-like, good extremely fine, a coveted centrepiece of any British numismatic cabinet, in NGC 'Sweetnam' holder, graded MS63* (Cert. #5878635-001)

The Chalaza-Selig coin at our remarkable 'Stratos' Sale (15 September 2020), bore the same core grade MS63 but lacked this Gem designation, but still brought £56,000 ($72,000, incl. BP).
