Auction: 20133 - Spink Numismatic e-Circular 3 - Part II: The Sovereign
Lot: 1312

James II (1660-85), Guinea, 1687, second bust, nothing below truncation, 8.24g, 7h (Murdoch II, 696[b]; Schneider II, 457; MCE 128; S.3402), a trace of double-striking in legends with some other minor flawing by the O of IACOBVS and below French shield, and trace smoothing by nose, otherwise a pleasingly bold very fine on a fuller flan

As expected for a business striking several multiple obverse dies were employed for striking the coinage. Whilst this example exhibits a uniformly sized D in DEI GRA, other examples have been noted where enlarged puncheons have been used. Further detail study will be revealed in English Gold Coinage by Maurice Bull (forthcoming).
