(x) U.S.A.: Continental Passenger Railway Company of Philadelphia, certificate for [100] shares, 18[80], #615, issued to William L. Elkins and signed by him on the reverse. Eagle and allegorical vignettes, black, cancelled. William L. Elkins (1832 - 1903), created the largest produce store in America before getting into crude oil refining, the company being the first to produce gasoline. He entered into partnership with Standard Oil becoming a large shareholder. His meeting with Peter Widener a couple of years earlier took him into street railways across America, making them both very wealthy. He was on the boards of many companies and a major shareholder in American Tobacco and International Mercantile Marine. VF.
