Lot: 713
Gloucestershire, Badminton (Duke of Beaufort Estate), Mule Halfpenny, 1796, obv. of Jelly & Arnott's Halfpenny, THE SALE OF CORN BY WEIGHT PROPOSED 1796, scale balance, rev. I WAS HUNGRY AND YE GAVE ME MEAT, beggar receiving alms from disembodied hand to left, edge plain, 6h, 10.31g (Conder 294/306; Atkins 32/27; D&H 49), light chocolate patina overlying attractively lustrous surfaces, about extremely fine, scarce
As Dalton & Hamer note, the Badminton series was not struck for the purpose of currency, but 'to perpetuate the memory of Duke of Beaufort, and to illustrate incidents connected with a period of a scarcity of corn [in the years falling the devastating Albion Mill fire of March 1791 - see lot XXX], and are all rather scarce.'
As was demonstrated by this house in the catalogue for the worthily-appreciated Dr Miller Collection of Crowns on 26 March 2019, the Dukes of Beaufort were keen numismatists and coin collectors prior to the death of the 7th Duke in 1835 after which point the collection lay largely dormant until the dispersal via Christie, Manson and Wood in 1890.
