Cape of Good Hope
1852-57 Private Ship Letters
1854 (24 Oct.) entire letter from Cape Town "per Hellespont" to London, bearing blued paper 4d. blue with clear to large margins and neatly cancelled, the reverse most unusually showing two step-type "ship letter/plymouth" (one crossed by repaired tear) alongside Cape Town and London (5.1) datestamps, rated "1/4" as a double rate ship letter in the U.K.; directed to be sent by the Hellespont, possibly under the misapprehension that this small sailing ship was the General Screw steamer of that name though as the Hellespont did not reach England until 24 January it is likely to have been carried by the Sir Robert Peel. A most unusual cover sent after the collapse of the GSSSCo's packet and coasting contracts. Photo
