Note: On 10 September 1896 the Crown Agents set an order for new key plates for permanent 2½d. and 5d. duties. On 20 September 1896 the Crown Agents requested surface printed essays in the Universal Keyplate design. These were rejected by the Colony on this occasion, but were eventually to replace the Perkins, Bacon design two years later.
