Surcharge Double and Omitted Varieties

Block of fourteen (2x7) comprising two vertical strips from Rows 4-10 of the sheet with the pair at foot showing part watermark letters "wn", Row 5/4-5 variety surcharge double with differently spaced overprints, and Row 10/4-5 variety surcharge omitted, fresh with large part original gum; the two pairs comprising the lower block of four both separated and rejoined, the upper pair with a horizontal crease. A remarkable multiple of this extremely rare duo of varieties with only twelve examples of each known to exist. B.P.A. Certificate (2016). S.G. 18/a/c, £91,500++

provenance:
Spink Collectors' Sale, January 2017

Note:: The surcharge forme was positioned too high, thus resulting in Row 5 receiving a double surcharge, whilst row 10 remained unsurcharged. This block also demonstrates differing separation widths of the surcharge double error. The lot is accompanied by a 1912 letter from W.H. Peckitt offering this block to Charles Hasslacher Esq. in which he advises the potential buyer that the price discussed was only for a single strip and not the block of fourteen. He suggests that he will split it if required as he has another gentleman who will purchase the second strip "as it makes no matter to me either way" though he continues "from a philatelic point of view it is such a pity to break it".
