1861 (Aug.) The "Cancelled" Obliterator
2d. yellowish green, clean-cut perforation, neatly handstamped with two part strikes of the "cancelled" obliterator in 1861, a few perfs. slightyl clipped at foot, otherwise fine. This stamp is position 2 in the block of six. Extremely rare, only one other example is recordedd whoich is is the Royal Philatelic Collection. S.G. 20b, £12,000

Note:
In August 1861 the printers, Perkins, Bacon & Co., provided six examples of each stamp in their possession to Ormond Hill (eldest son of Rowland Hill) for members of his family. These fascinating stamps and the story behind their appearance, have been fully described by Peter Jaffé in his book "cancelled" by Perkins Bacon.
