1861 (Aug.) The "Cancelled" Obliterator
no watermark, clean-cut perf 14 to 16, (½d.) deep green neatly cancelled by two part strikes of the "canceled" obliterator; straight edge at right and perfs clipped at foot. Extremely rare, being one of four recorded examples. S.G. 17, £12,000

Note:
In August 1861 the printers, Perkins, Bacon & Co., provided six examples of each stamp in their possession to Ormond Hill (eldest son of Rowland Hill) for members of his family. These fascinating stamps and the story behind their appearance, have been fully described by Peter Jaffé in his book "cancelled"
by Perkins Bacon.
