The First Expedition

1922 (14 June) a long envelope sent by Dr Arthur Wakefield to his father in Carnforth, Lancashire bearing India K.G.V 2a. tied by Pharijong type B4 c.d.s.; fine and scarce mail from this expedition. This was sent when they were on their way back to India. Photo

Dr Wakefield suffered from the high altitudes more than expected and remained at camp III as advance base medical officer. Capt. Noel wrote that at Snowfield Camp he was having a meal with Dr Wakefield watching the tiny specks crawling up the face of the ice cliff when suddenly they are all engulfed by an avalanche. Seven porters died. That was on 7th June and the expedition was abandoned
