Following the third Nepal - Tibet War, provisions of the 1856 treaty gave Nepal the right to have political representation in Tibet. A Nepali Resident was stationed in Lhasa, called the Gurkha Office, to settle disputes involving Nepali citizens. In return Nepal withdrew from the occupied areas of Kuti, Kirong and Jhunga
