Incoming Mail from the United Kingdom
1858 (15 Sept.) large part entire from London to Lieut. Holmes of the Royal Artillery bearing 1855-57 wing-margin 6d. lilac cancelled with "76" duplex and with Belize double-arc datestamp (B2) on reverse, and 1859 (15 Feb.) entire letter ex he same correspondence, rated "6" and showing Lombard St. datestamp at right, the reverse with Belize double-arc datestamp (B2); fold faults though a scarce pair as few incoming letters have survived prior to 1860

Note: Lieut. Holmes, who served with The 2nd. West India Regiment, was part of a force that there was there to protect Belize City from the sea following a fear of reprisal raids after the Battle of St. George's Caye in 1798. The strength of the regiment was just 17 officers, 17 sergeants, 6 drummers and 367 rank and file. Note that the address on both of these covers is inscribed "British Honduras", although the settlement only became a British Colony in 1862
