Naval Good Shooting Medal, E.VII.R. (165802 J. Sandback, P.O., H.M.S. Hibernia. 1910. 9.2. In B. L.), nearly extremely fine

Joseph Sandbach was born at Stafford on 5 August 1876. He joined the Royal Navy as Boy 2nd Class in 1891 serving on multiple vessels and in multiple ranks over his career. On 2 February 1908 he was posted to Hibernia and while serving on that vessel in 1910 he won the Naval Good Shooting Medal whilst a Petty Officer.

He served with 63 Royal Naval Division, Howe Battalion during the Great War and took part in the Landings at Cape Hellas with the Royal Naval Division. During this battle the Division earned six Victoria Crosses. Sandback, now commissioned a Sub-Lieutenant was with his Battalion at this time and on 9 May 1915 suffered an injury to the forehead. He recovered and returned to the trenches only to be killed slightly over a month later 20 July 1915 at the age of 35. He is buried in the Redoubt Cemetery on Cape Helles; sold with copied research.
