Alert George Closson was born on 25 June 1897 at Hornsey, London, and was employed with the General Post Office initially as a Boy Messenger, and later as a Postal Sorter. In addition he was also a serving member of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve with the London Division, but was initially retained to perform his civil work during the Great War, but was then called up 'for hostilities only' into the Royal Navy on 6 October 1916 as a Ship's Steward's Assistant (No.M.23088) with Victory I. Posted aboard the battleship Emperor of India from June 1917, he saw service with her as part of the Grand Fleet in the North Sea, being rated as a Victualler's Assistant in February 1918. Closson was discharged ashore to return to his work with the General Post Office in June 1918, and was fully demobilised in November 1919, reverting to his serving with the R.N.V.R.
