Pair: Engineer Lieutenant J. Garrow., Royal Naval Reserve, aboard H.M.S. Kent at the Battle of the Falkland Islands

John Garrow served with the Royal Naval Reserve from 8 November 1909. At the start of the First World War he was stationed in England, however by 3 October 1914 he was appointed to serve aboard Kent; a Monmouth-class armoured cruiser. On 8 December 1914 the Kent was part of the Royal Navy squadron that confronted and defeated Von Spee's German East Asia squadron in the Battle of the Falklands Island. The Kent pursued and sank the SMS Nürnberg during this engagement though it suffered some damage in the process being hit 38 times.

In 1915 she also took part in the battle of Más a Tierra, the sinking of SMS Dresden which had escaped the fate of its squadron at the Falklands. Garrow served with the Kent until 28 November 1917 before returning to England. In the final months of the war he moved to King Alfred before finally being demobilised 18 November 1919.
He was placed on the retired list 13 January 1928 with the rank of Engineer Lieutenant; sold with copied Service Record.
