Sidney Upton was born at Battersea, London on 5 July 1890 and enlisted in the Royal Naval Air Service on 13 November 1911. Confirmed as having been landed for the Friedrickshaven Raid (The 1914 Star to the Royal Navy & Royal Marines, Fevyer & Wilson, refers), he earned a mention (London Gazette 1 May 1918, refers) whist aboard Empress. That entry covered his service from 1 July-31 December 1917, during which the Short 184's flew quayside sheds in Beirut in July and in October they participated during the Third Battle for Gaza. Commissioned on 1 April 1918, he was advanced Flying Officer on 24 October 1919, before his commission was cancelled on 24 October 1919. Re-commissioned in 1924, he was advanced Flight Lieutenant on 2 June 1934 and Squadron Leader on 1 July 1938. He was retired in the rank of Wing Commander on 11 February 1945; sold with copied research.
