William Wakefield was born at St Mary's, Cork and enlisted aged 14 1/2 in the 81st Regiment, a butter servant by trade at the time. He served with the unit for 21 years, 217 days, and was in possession of three Good Conduct Badges besides his two campaign medals. With his name in the Defaulters Book some 34 times, he was never tried by Court Martial and was discharged at the rank of Private at Chichester on 7 June 1875. Wakefield intended to reside at the County Asylum, Manchester; sold with copied service record.
