A 1917 D.C.M. pair awarded to Battery Sergeant-Major E. J. Berryman, 462nd Battery, 179th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, who was also awarded a French Croix de Guerre

D.C.M. London Gazette 28 March 1918:

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an enemy attack. He displayed the utmost coolness and resource under heavy shell and machine gun fire throughout the day, and by his disregard of danger and personal example enabled the men of a section of which he took charge to maintain the fire of their guns until all the ammunition was exhausted.'

Edward John Berryman, a native of Chichester, saw service initially as a Corporal (No.24280) with the Royal Field Artillery, being present with 'N' Battery, Royal Horse Artillery in France and Flanders from 27 September 1914. He later saw service as a Battery Sergeant Major with the field artillery in 'C' Battery, 87th Brigade, being hospitalised at Eastbourne with a fractured left femur in September 1916.

It was however whilst a Battery Sergeant Major with the 462nd Battery in the 179th Brigade that Berryman won the Distinguished Conduct Medal, the award being gazetted on 28 March 1918, which gazette covers the period from 10 October 1917 to 8 January 1918 and includes the awards for Cambrai and Passchendaele; sold with copied research.
