D.S.O. London Gazette 26 July 1918:

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. By the skilful handling of the Battalion under his command he kept the line intact throughout the whole action, and successfully supported the line on his left. On two occasions he organised counter-attacks and drove off the enemy with severe loss. Throughout the action he displayed leadership of a high order.'

Frederick Charles Gregory was first commissioned into the 1st (Volunteer) Battalion, Cheshire Regiment on 1 February 1906. Transferred to the 4th Battalion in 1908, he first landed with the 1/4th Battalion at Gallipoli on 17 July 1915. He was wounded in action - suffering a fracture of the tibia (from gunshot) and a bullet wound to the left foot - soonafter, leaving his unit on 10 August and being treated at home at Walker's Hospital at Sussex Lodge, Regents Park.

Returned to his unit, he thence saw action on the Western Front and was in command of the Battalion during the action which earned his decoration. On 23 March 1918, he formed 'Number 1 Battalion' as part of 'Hunt's Force', which took up the line between Maricourt and Suzanne during the German offensive. Gregory also finished the Great War with a mention (London Gazette 27 December 1918, refers). His Medals were sent to The Riding School, Shrewsbury in 1920; sold with copied research.
