1849 (25 June) entire letter in French from a French Jesuit missionary to his superior, the President of the Conseil Central de L'Ouvre de la Propagation de la Foi Lion, showing red boxed aden/paid (Proud type P1) for 8a., sent by steamer from the East India Co. via Suez and Alexandria where it arrived on July 13th and then on to Malta where it was disinfected and marked on the back with "purifié au lazaret/malte" handstamp and showing paq.ang 1 marseille c.d.s. in red.
