Japanese Post Office: 1898 (28 Apr.) ½c. green card (PC2) to Germany "via Amerika" cancelled by a clean strike of the double-circle c.d.s. in blue and without any further postage. Carried privately by steamer to Japan where it entered the mail system, with Yokohama (16.6) c.d.s. Much redirected in Germany but only with Hartzburg (13.7) arrival and another for the same date.

A most unusual card which was used well after the local post was accepted outside of its port. It is amazing that this passed through so many postal authorities without any postage due required. Carl H. Lange guarantee on the reverse. Photo

This card was not routed through Shanghai but left Chefoo directly. The Japanese Post Office there had closed may years earlier and the long delay between the Chefoo and Yokohama datestamps indicates that this letter was waiting for a suitable boat to begin its journey.
