(x) Aethelred II (978-1016), Penny, 1.66g, Long Cross type, London, Aethelwerd, æÐelræd rex angl•, the ng ligate, draped bust left, rev. ædelperd m'o lvn, voided long cross, pellet in 2nd and 3rd quarters (N.774; S.1151; SCBI 7 (Copenhagen) 693; noted by Parsons, BNJ XIII, p. 25 and this coin illustrated), peck marks on reverse, very fine

provenance:
The 'Viking' collection, Spink auction 150, 14 March 2001, lot 1015
Parsons, Sotheby, 28 October - 1 November 1929, lot 137 (part), to Daniels

The coins in the Parsons collection were not illustrated, but this coin was used to illustrate his article in the BNJ where the caption states that it is in his collection (other coins illustrating the article were from various sources including Carlyon-Britton, W C Wells, the Royal Cabinet, Stockholm, and the British Museum). Furthermore, in the Sotheby catalogue of the Parsons collection, though this coin is part of a lot of five, it is fully described, 'rare variety with two pellets on reverse'.
As Daniels was a dealer we cannot be sure where the coin went after the Parsons sale. At the sale of the Daniels' remaining stock, dispersed 'by order of the executors' at Glendining,16 March 1936, sixteen London Pennies of Aethelred II were offered in lot 305, the description being 'Aethelred II pennies of London (16), various types and different moneyers, very good', but it is not likely that this coin would be still be in stock after six years.
