provenance:
Purchased from M R Roberts, May 1991

'For the greater part of Eadred's reign Northumbria, but not the Five Boroughs, was under the control of the Vikings. They recovered it the year after his accession and held it until 952, with probably a slight intermission in 946/7. Consequently the York coinage in Eadred's name is not on an extensive scale. Ingelgar is again a moneyer for the English king but it seems possible that his work for the Vikings resulted in his dismissal from office soon after Eadred recovered York. If so, most of his coins are likely to date from the earlier part of Eadred's reign.' (SCBI 34, p.xxi)
