Major-General Rudolf Carl Von Slatin (1857-1932) was an Anglo-Austrian soldier and administrator in the Sudan. Slatin was recommended by Emin Pasha to Gordon. Between 1879 and 1881 he served as Mudir of Dara until he was promoted to Governor-General. Slatin spent eleven years captive under the Mahdists until he escaped over a 1000km, three week journey across the desert to Aswan, Egypt in 1895.
