Richard Owen
1875 (23 January) ALS from Richard Owen to a friend regarding his discovery of Manatee fossils in the bed of the River Nile. Owen also pre-empts his article to be published on the findings of David Livingstone on the Lualaba river. Owen hopes to give the reader a sense of the "true ... character of David Livingstone".
A fascinating letter alluding to the great search for the source of the River Nile. Photo

Richard Owen (1804 - 1892), British geologist, biologist and comparative anatomist. Renowned for his study of fossils and for coining the term 'Dinosaur', Owen is also widely held responsible for the establishment of the British Museum of Natural History. In the public eye, Owen was also known for his disagreements with Charles Darwin over his evolution theory.

David Livingstone (1813 - 1873), Scottish physician and Christian Missionary. Aside from his missionary work, Livingstone preoccupied himself with discovering the source of the Nile, which for a long time he held as the Lualaba River. In 1840, Livingstone attended lectures at the London Missionary School, among his teachers was Richard Owen.
