Richard Partridge
1863 two letters from Richard Partridge, the first 1863 (29 July) to Mr. Metcalfe detailing a treatment for an ulcer on "Mr. Potter's" gum, signed "R. Partridge". The second, mounted on card, 1863 (12 August) having received a letter from General Garibaldi, Partridge notes that "he tells me that his leg is nearly well". Signed "R. Partridge". Photo

Richard Partridge (1805-1873), known for his involvement in apprehending the London Burkers gang after a member had tried to sell him a victim's body (1831). Later he was known for his consultation on the bullet wound to Giuseppe Garibaldi's leg. Partridge had been of the opinion that due to the lack of swelling around the ankle, the bullet had not made contact with the joint and Garibaldi would recover shortly, as this letter seems to suggest. Garibaldi's leg would only deteriorate until Italian surgeon, Zanetti successfully retracted the bullet.
