Charles John Canning (1812-1862), 1st Earl Canning, known also as The Viscount Canning, was Governor-General of India during the Indian Mutiny, 1857, then first Viceroy of India after transfer of power from the East India Company to Queen Victoria. Previously, Canning had been Postmaster General from 1853-55.
