Leoline Jenkins, Secret Service
1680 (14 June), order to pay "Sir Lioline Jenkins", Secretary of State, "the summe of two thousand pounds without account for his Majesties seceret service", signed "L: Hyde", "J Ernle", "Ed Dering", "S Godolphin" and "S Fox". The second half of the document, separated by a horziontal cut accross the page, presumably for filing purposes, instructing Sir Thomas Vernon to pay £1000 out of the loan "by Mr. Kent & Duncombe", John Loving to pay £500 "out of arears of the late Hearth Contractors" and Sir Thomas Vernon to pay the remaining £500 out of money leant by "Mr. Nath. Horneby". The latter two payments are both signed by Howard and at the bottom, examined by Howard, denoted by signature. Photo

Leoline Jenkins (1625-1685), was a Welsh academic, diplomat and Royalist during the Civil War. He was Secretary of State for the Northern Department (1680-1681) and Secretary of State for the Southern Department (1681-1684). Jenkins became Principal of Jesus College from 1661-1673, a position awarded to him by Charles II for his loyalty during the English Civil War.
