1664 (28 June), receipt by Henry Mordaunt, Earl of Peterborough, for £250 received from Thomas Povey assigned for the city and garrison of Tangier as part of Mordaunt's pensions of £1000 per annum. Signed "Peterborough". Photo

Henry Mordaunt, 2nd Earl of Peterborough (1621 - 1697), served for his father in the Parliamentary army until 1643 when he switched allegiances to the Royalists. In an attempt to seize Reigate for the King Mordaunt was badly wounded and escaped to Antwerp, returning to England in 1649. In 1662 Mordaunt was put in command of the Tangier Regiment with varying success. In 1687 Mordaunt became a Roman Catholic and was impeached for high treason.
