William Douglas, Earl of Selkirk, 3rd Duke of Hamilton (1634-1694), supporter of the Royalist cause and fined £1,000 by Cromwell in 1654 under the terms of the English Commonwealth's Act of Pardon and Grace to the People of Scotland. Hamilton married Anne, Duchess of Hamilton (1632-1716) who had had her estate confiscated by Cromwell for which the Duke spent many years trying to rebuild from their losses. It is understood that he did not do so until around 1660, just before he entered into political, public life.
