Auction: 19019 - Bonds and Share Certificates of the World e-Auction

Great Britain: Andrew Handyside & Co. Ltd., a pair of certificates for £20 shares, 187[92], #289, black, and, 6% Cumulative Preference shares, 19[01], #25, green, Britannia in medallion at top and again in the attractive embossed seals. Handyside acquired the Britannia Foundry in 1848, producing ornamental ironwork, lamp postsand even railway bridges. He also made the Post Office standard letterboxes. Railway structures were built at st,. Enoch Station in Glasgow, market hall buildings were sent all over the world and bridges were made in Nottingham (Wilford Toll and Trent) and the Albert Suspension Bridge in London. The largest structure built, said to be the largest in the world, was the roof of the National Agricultural Hall, now known as Olympia. In the 1890's the Barton Aqueduct and the Swing Bridge were made for the Manchester Ship Canal. The firm gradually declined and the foundry was demolished in the early years of the 20th century.
