Henry George Gordon Matthews was born on 4 November 1899 at Fulham, London. A machine hand by trade, he enlisted into the Royal Naval Air Service on his 18th birthday and served as Boy Mechanic at President II and the storage facility Tregantle in Cornwall. Transferred to the Royal Air Force on 31 March 1918, Matthews witnessed extensive service in India before returning to the U.K. and being confirmed in the rank of Flying Officer during the Second World War (London Gazette 23 June 1940, refers). Appointed Squadron Leader on 1 January 1943, Matthews relinquished his commission at his own request on 2 June 1948. He died in January 1980 at Eastbourne, East Sussex.
