(x) Stephen (1135-54), Penny, 0.99g, local and irregular issue of the Civil War, uncertain baronial variant of BMC I, Penny, 0.99g, East Anglian mint?, William, vvi[llelmvs?], legend begins at 1 o'clock, crudely cut crowned bust right, sceptre before, rev. wlle[..]llil:[...], cross moline, a fleur in each angle (Mack - ; N.873 var.; S.1278 var.), softly struck and some scrapes below bust, and corresponding on reverse, an interesting crude style, full flan, very fine, extremely rare

The find spot of the current piece places it within a stones throw of several East Anglian mints known to have been striking irregular coinage during the Anarchy. The mint at Bury St Edmunds did have a moneyer willem but he is only known to have struck from Type 7 onwards
