The Norweb cataloguer, following the Lockett cataloguer, gives the moneyer's name as
'Walkelin, the moneyer of Derby, is referred to in contemporary deeds and it is suggested that this type may have been issued by Robert de Ferrers, earl of Derby, during Stephen's captivity during the summer of 1141 when there was considerable chaos all over the country, particularly amongst the king's supporters, the unusual lettering and crude workmanship of the coins being the work of the local seal cutter'.
