provenance:
St James's Auction 3, 3 October 2005, lot 116 (as Exeter)
Brettell, Coins of Exeter, Glendining, 28 October 1970, lot 309 (as Exeter)

The Brettell catalogue notes 'perhaps Canterbury as suggested by Brooke (BMC p.CCXI) probably on the basis of this coin'.

Simon is attested at Leicester (lere) cf. SCBI 48 (Northern Museums) no. 1214, and Canterbury (can), cf. EMC.2005.0159. Allen also gives Simon at Exeter (BNJ 2012, p. 110, note 618), on the grounds of two coins, BM ex Hasluck Bequest, and this coin, but both these coins have only partially legible mint signatures, [...]e (possibly Leicester) for the former, and, he reads, ea[...] (possibly Exeter), for this piece. In our opinion this piece is more likely to read ca[...] for Canterbury.

Another example appeared in the Murdoch and Carlyon-Britton sales, and according to both the sale cataogues the coin apparently clearly read simv[n] on eaxe.
