Canterbury (Bournemouth) hoard
The Canterbury hoard of, apparently, 358 Pennies of Henry I, deposited c. 1130-35, was said to have been found in 1901. Thompson, Inventory of British Coin Hoards (1956), notes 'The circumstances of this find are obscure, but the coins are said to have been found during work at the Archbishop's Palace and afterwards taken to Bournemouth. Major Carlyon-Britton saw many of them, but it is impossible to give the exact composition of the hoard.'
North gives the moneyer's name as Ailword, but in BMC and SCBI (vols. 19 and 20) it is given as Alwold. In her note on moneyer's names in SCBI 19 (Bristol and Gloucester Museums), Veronica Smart comments the Old English name 'Aethelweald is by now completely changed to Ailwald/Ailwold.'
