Early Letters and Handstamps
1819 (21 Mar.) entire letter to Basingstoke, rated "1/4", showing good to fine strike of circular undated "sydney/new-south-wales" handstamp (Type S1) and step-type "portsmouth/ship letter" in red; a little soiled and some wear along folds. The interesting contents include "Colony is healthy and fruitful...We shall do very well here...children are educated free...There are about twenty thousand English people in this colony". A most desirable example of Australia's first postal marking. Very rare, only seventeen examples are recorded, of which only six to eight are thought to be in private hands. Photo
